What to expect at the first appointment? At your first appointment, we will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to understand your ADHD symptoms and how they affect your daily life. This evaluation is primarily a clinical assessment, meaning it is based on the interpretation of symptoms by a qualified healthcare professional rather than solely on tests or lab results. We will start by gathering a detailed history of your ADHD symptoms, focusing on how they impact areas such as academic or work performance, social interactions, and personal relationships. This helps us gain a clear picture of your overall functioning. During the appointment, we may also use standardized rating scales and questionnaires to assess the severity of your ADHD symptoms. These tools provide additional insights that guide the diagnostic process and help in creating a personalized treatment plan. At the end of the appointment, Dr. Lee will inform you of his initial diagnostic impression and review any treatment options if warranted. Santa Barbara ADHD Clinic specializes in the treatment of ADHD. If Dr. Lee identifies any other psychiatric condition that may benefit from additional treatment outside the scope of practice at Santa Barbara ADHD Clinic, he will let you know and may provide referrals as appropriate. Please note that in such cases, the clinic may not be able to provide ongoing care for those conditions. Note for Minors: The evaluation consists of two 1-hour sessions over two days. The first session is dedicated to gathering history from both the parent and the child. The second session is for reviewing parent/teacher rating scales and discussing the assessment findings along with any recommendations.

How do you treat ADHD?Our approach to treating ADHD is evidence-based, meaning that it is grounded in extensive research and clinical experience. One of the most effective classes of medication for treating ADHD are stimulants, such as Adderall. However, it's crucial to carefully consider the potential risks and benefits before starting medication. Throughout treatment, we closely monitor each individual's response to medication and adjust the dosage or type of medication as needed to optimize effectiveness. In addition to medication, we may also recommend behavioral therapy, lifestyle modifications, or other interventions to support ADHD management. Our goal is to provide personalized and comprehensive treatment that addresses the unique needs and challenges of each individual with ADHD.

Do you treat other psychiatric conditions? No, our clinic is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). We focus exclusively on ADHD and its related challenges. If you are seeking treatment for other psychiatric conditions, we recommend seeking appropriate care elsewhere from a mental health provider who specializes in those areas. During the evaluation process, our psychiatrist screens for other psychiatric conditions that may be present. If additional conditions are identified, we will inform the individual and recommend seeking treatment elsewhere, as these conditions are not within the scope of our practice. Our priority is to ensure that individuals receive the most suitable and effective treatment for their overall mental health.

Can you prescribe controlled substances like Adderall without an in-person visit?Yes, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been temporary flexibilities in telemedicine regulations, allowing for the prescription of controlled substances without requiring an in-person visit. This measure was implemented to ensure patients' access to necessary medications while minimizing the risk of exposure to the virus. You may read more about these flexibilities here: https://www.dea.gov/documents/2023/2023-10/2023-10-06/dea-and-hhs-extend-telemedicine-flexibilities-through-2024 However, it's essential to note that these flexibilities are set to expire in December 2024. After this period, patients may be required to have an in-person visit for the prescription of controlled substances. The original regulation, set forth by the Ryan Haight Act, mandates in-person visits for prescribing controlled substances. You may read more about the Ryan Haight Act here: https://www.prms.com/media/2330/ryan-haight-act.pdf Please be aware that in-person visits may be required for the prescription of controlled substances after the expiration of these flexibilities in December 2024. However, there may be an option for in-person visits based on updated regulations. Our clinic will continue to keep patients informed of any updates or changes to these regulations.

Do you see people who do not live in the Santa Barbara area?Yes, it is possible for individuals outside of the Santa Barbara area to receive evaluation and treatment at our clinic as long as they are physically located within California. However, it's important to note that due to shortages of medications used to treat ADHD, many pharmacies may deny prescriptions from clinics located outside of their service area. While our clinic can still evaluate and provide recommendations for treatment, please be aware that the clinic is not responsible for pharmacies denying prescriptions due to these policies. We advise individuals from outside the area to inquire with their local pharmacies regarding their prescription policies before scheduling an appointment.
